Does exporting a WhatsApp chat notify the other person?

WhatsApp's help pages describe no notification when you export a chat, and we found no report of one. What the other person can see, and what can block it.

As far as we can tell, no. WhatsApp’s help pages describe no notification when you export a chat, and we found no credible report of anyone being told. WhatsApp hasn’t said outright that there’s none, so we can’t promise it. What the other person can do is turn on a setting that blocks exporting.

What WhatsApp says about exporting

WhatsApp’s export page gives the steps for each device, with a few notes about media and view once messages. None of its versions mentions telling anyone. Our guide shows how to export a chat step by step.

WhatsApp does say so when other actions alert people:

So a notice on export would be an odd thing to leave out. That’s our reading, and WhatsApp hasn’t confirmed it.

How someone could still find out

WhatsApp may stay silent, but the file itself can give you away.

  • Where you send it. At the end of an export, your phone asks where the file should go. On iPhone, choose Save to Files. On Android, choose your own drive or a private folder. If you pick a chat or a shared email account, a copy lands there.
  • Who can get to your phone. The file stays wherever you saved it until you delete it, and anyone who can open your phone can find it. If that’s a risk for you, read how to stay safe while saving evidence first.
  • Shared accounts. If you share a cloud drive or a computer with the person, save the file somewhere they can’t reach.
  • Using it. Anyone you give it to can pass it on. If it goes to court, the other side will normally see it. Our article on small claims court explains how evidence gets exchanged.

The setting that blocks exports

If Export chat is missing from just one chat, Restricted chat may be on. While it’s on, people in the chat can’t export it, can’t automatically save its media to their gallery and can’t use linked devices for it.

  • In a one-to-one chat, WhatsApp says anyone in the chat can turn it on or off.
  • In a group, group admins can turn it on, and it applies to every member.
  • In an older chat, or if your WhatsApp hasn’t got the update, you may see Advanced chat privacy instead, which also blocks exports. WhatsApp says those chats don’t update to Restricted chat automatically.

Turning it off may not be private. WhatsApp’s help page doesn’t describe a notice, but WABetaInfo’s report on a test version says a system message appears in the chat when someone restricts it. An earlier report says the same for any change to Advanced chat privacy in a test version. So it’s safest to assume the other person could see a change. If that could cause you a problem, take screenshots of what matters and get advice first. Our page on export problems has more on this.

What about screenshots

WhatsApp warns that other users might take screenshots of your messages and share them, and it doesn’t describe a notification for this. WABetaInfo reported in 2025 that WhatsApp had decided against screenshot detection for chats.

Two things are blocked on supported Android and iPhone versions, so no alert is needed:

WhatsApp warns that view once media can still be photographed with another device, and that view once voice messages can be recorded.

View once messages also stay out of exports. WhatsApp’s iPhone page says so, and its Web page adds disappearing messages.

Keeping a copy and sharing it are different things

An export is a copy of a chat you’re already part of, kept on your own phone. Showing it to someone else raises different questions, about privacy, data protection and defamation. Our article on whether it’s illegal to share WhatsApp messages goes through them.

Exporting from someone else’s phone without their permission is a separate matter again, because getting into another person’s device or account can be an offence.

Reading your export in private

You can open your export on Chatonfile.com and read, search and filter it free on your own device, with nothing from the chat sent to us. That’s often enough on its own.

If you need a copy to keep, you can order a dated PDF with the voice notes written out and a summary with the key highlights and promises. We send its link and PIN only to the email address you pay with, and our security page lists who handles what.

Common questions

Will someone know if I export our WhatsApp chat?

As far as we can tell, no. WhatsApp's help pages describe no notification for exporting, and we found no credible report of one. WhatsApp hasn't said outright that there is none, so we can't promise it.

Can the other person stop me exporting a chat?

Yes. In a one-to-one chat, either of you can turn on Restricted chat, which stops everyone in the chat from exporting it. In a group, admins can turn it on for every member.

Does WhatsApp tell people when you take a screenshot?

WhatsApp doesn't describe a notification for screenshots of ordinary messages, and its help page warns that people might take them. View once media and profile photos are different, because WhatsApp blocks screenshots of those on supported phones.

Does exporting remove the chat from WhatsApp?

WhatsApp's export page says nothing about removing anything. An export is a text file you get as a copy, and it can't be imported back into WhatsApp.
