Questions about your WhatsApp PDF
What your PDF can and can't do for you, where your chat goes, and what to do when an export doesn't look right.

All questions
Using your PDF
Will a court accept this?
We can't promise that. Each court decides for itself. Your PDF is a clear, complete copy of your export, and it says it isn't certified. If your case depends on it, ask your lawyer what they need and keep the chat on your phone.
Can someone say I changed the messages?
We print your export as it is, and you can't edit messages in Chat on File. Someone could still question it, because an export is a text file. So keep the chat on your phone. Your PDF also has a code that anyone with the same export can check.
What does the fingerprint prove?
The fingerprint is a SHA-256 hash of the exported chat text. Anyone with the same export can calculate it and compare. A match shows the record was made from that exact text. It can't show that the export itself is what WhatsApp produced, so keep the chat on your phone as well.
How good is the summary?
AI writes it from your messages and voice notes, and it can make mistakes. Each highlight shows its message number, so you can check it. It says what was said and when, and it doesn't take sides or give advice.
Can I give the PDF to a lawyer or mediator?
Yes. It's an ordinary PDF. You can email it, print it or upload it to a portal. Message numbers make it easy for them to point to the exact line.
Can I leave out messages?
No. A record contains everything in the export, in order. You can't edit it or remove messages, which is what makes it different from a set of chosen screenshots.
Can I change the title on the first page?
Yes. You choose the title before you order, and it starts as the names of the people in the chat.
Your privacy
Do the other people in the chat find out?
No. WhatsApp doesn't tell anyone when you export a chat, and we never contact anyone in it.
Is anything uploaded while I read?
No. Your export opens inside your browser, and nothing reaches our server unless you order a record.
How long do you keep my chat?
The chat text, the transcripts and the photos are deleted as soon as your PDF is made. Each voice recording goes earlier, once it's written out. An order you don't pay for is deleted after about a day.
How long do you keep the PDF?
30 days, so you have time to download it. You can delete it yourself sooner, and that takes effect immediately.
Who else handles my chat?
Google's Gemini API writes out the voice notes, and Anthropic's Claude API writes the summary and key highlights. If one of them is down, the job goes to the other or to OpenAI's API. Stripe takes the payment and never sees your chat. Resend sends our emails, and Cloudflare carries traffic to our server. The privacy page has the details.
Am I allowed to use a chat that has other people's messages in it?
You're responsible for having a lawful reason to use it, and in many places that includes using it to protect your own rights. If you're unsure, ask a lawyer before you share it.
Your export
Why doesn't my export have voice notes or photos?
You probably exported without media. Export the chat again and choose to include media. Chat on File tells you if any files are missing before you pay.
Why does my record start later than my chat did?
An export only holds what's on the device you export from, so older messages can be missing. WhatsApp limits how much one export can hold. People generally report about 40,000 messages without media and about 10,000 with it, counted from the most recent. Your record shows the period the export really covers.
Which files can I open?
A .zip or .txt file exported from WhatsApp. Chat on File works out dates and names from the file itself, so it doesn't matter which language your phone uses.
Does it work with group chats?
Yes. Everyone in the group gets their own colour, and the first page lists each person with their number of messages.
What happens to videos and documents?
They stay on your device. The record lists each one by file name at the point it was sent.
Does it work with Telegram, Signal or iMessage?
Not at the moment. Chat on File reads WhatsApp exports only.
Why can't I see reactions?
WhatsApp leaves reactions, like a heart or a thumbs up, out of its exports. So they aren't shown here or in your PDF.
Voice notes and languages
How accurate are the voice notes?
Most notes come out well, but AI can make mistakes, especially with names, background noise and quiet speech. Your PDF says so on its first page. Check any note that matters against the audio.
Which languages work?
Any language WhatsApp exports, including right-to-left languages like Arabic and Hebrew. Voice notes are written out in the language they were spoken. When you order, you choose the language of your summary and headings, from 24 languages.
Can I listen to the voice notes for free?
Yes. When you open your chat, you can play every voice note in the export on your own device.
Are voice notes translated?
No. Each one is written out in the language it was spoken, word for word. If the speaker changes language, the text changes with them.
Paying and getting your PDF
How much does a record cost?
From $5. For example, $10 for 3,000 messages with 30 minutes of voice notes. You see the exact price for your chat before you pay.
Is it a subscription?
No. You pay once for each record.
Do I need an account?
No. You can read your chat and order your PDF without one. Stripe asks for your email when you pay. Your PDF opens straight away in the browser you paid in. We also email you a link and a PIN, which open it anywhere else.
I lost my link. How do I find my PDF?
Choose Find my PDF at the bottom of any page and enter the email you paid with. We'll send you the link and PIN again.
How long does it take?
Usually a few minutes. Long chats with many voice notes take longer. We email you when it's ready.
Can I download it more than once?
Yes, as often as you like for 30 days. Once you've saved it, the copy on your device is yours to keep.
What if something goes wrong with my record?
Email [email protected] and we'll fix it or refund you.
