Sometimes. The realistic way is a backup made before the message was deleted. WhatsApp can’t do it for you. It says it’s “unable to recover deleted messages”, and it doesn’t keep messages once they’re delivered. Restoring a backup also removes anything newer, so export the chats you care about before you try.
If you deleted a message a moment ago, look for Undo on your screen. On Android, WhatsApp gives you 5 seconds.
Which kind of deletion was it
Delete for me. The message is gone from your phone only. WhatsApp says this has “no impact on your recipients’ chats”. So the other person still has it, and the easiest fix is to ask them for a screenshot or an export.
Delete for everyone. The sender has two days to do this, and everyone sees “This message was deleted” in its place. A group admin can also delete other people’s messages within two days, and the line then names the admin. It doesn’t always work. WhatsApp says recipients might see the message first, or the deletion might fail without the sender being told.
How to restore from a backup
A backup only helps if it was made after the message arrived and before it was deleted. WhatsApp’s help pages don’t say how this works for a message someone else deleted for everyone. A backup made before the deletion should still hold it, but we can’t promise that.
- Export your important chats now. “Any messages sent and received after the latest backup can’t be restored.” Our guide shows how to export a chat.
- Check when your last backup ran. Look in Settings, Chats, Chat backup. If it ran after the deletion, it won’t have the message.
- Don’t create a new backup. It permanently replaces the one holding your messages, and there’s only one.
- Restore it. On Android, uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp, then tap Restore. On iPhone, check iCloud Drive is on for WhatsApp, reinstall it, verify your number and Apple ID, then tap Restore Chat History.
Check these first:
- You need the same phone number and the same type of phone. An Android backup won’t restore on an iPhone, or the reverse.
- A backup more than 120 days old may not restore.
Other places to look
The other person’s phone. If you deleted the message for yourself, it’s still in their chat.
An earlier export. A file you exported before the deletion doesn’t change afterwards.
An old phone. Read how to get messages from an old phone.
Android notification history. Some Android phones can list recent notifications, which may include the text of a WhatsApp message. It has real limits:
- It only works if you turned it on beforehand.
- On Pixel phones it covers the last 24 hours.
- Some devices don’t have it.
- You won’t get photos or files.
Google and WhatsApp don’t describe this as a way to read deleted messages, so treat it as a lucky break if it works. We found no iPhone equivalent.
What WhatsApp and the police can get
WhatsApp says it “cannot and does not produce the content” of messages in response to government requests. Its law enforcement page says delivered messages aren’t stored, and undelivered ones are deleted after 30 days.
It can provide account details with the right legal process, such as a name and IP address. It can also preserve account records for 90 days while that process is under way.
Investigators may also examine a phone or a backup directly. What they find depends on what’s left there, and nobody can promise a result in advance.
Be careful with recovery apps
Plenty of apps promise to recover or read deleted WhatsApp messages. WhatsApp doesn’t keep delivered messages, and anything still waiting on its servers is encrypted, so these apps can’t get messages from there. At most they can read notifications as they arrive, or files already on your phone. To do that, they ask for wide access to your phone, including messages from everyone who writes to you. Think hard before you pay for one or grant that access.
How to protect messages from now on
If a chat matters, export it today. Someone can delete a message for everyone tomorrow, and your file won’t change.
- Export the chat with media and keep the ZIP in two places. Our guide to preserving messages as evidence has the details.
- Turn on automatic backups in your chat backup settings.
- Check whether disappearing messages are on in that chat.
To check what you have, open your export on Chatonfile.com. You can read and search it for free on your device, and any message deleted for everyone appears as a line in the timeline, at the time it was sent. A message you deleted for yourself doesn’t appear at all.
Common questions
Can I see a message someone deleted for everyone?
WhatsApp replaces it with a line saying the message was deleted, and offers no way to read it. An earlier export or backup may still hold it. On some Android phones, notification history may show it if that feature was already on.
Can deleted WhatsApp messages be recovered without a backup?
Rarely. WhatsApp doesn't keep delivered messages. Without a backup, your best option is a copy somewhere else, such as the other person's phone or an earlier export.
Can police recover deleted WhatsApp messages?
WhatsApp says it can't give the content of messages to governments, because it doesn't store them once delivered. Investigators may examine a phone or a backup directly, and what they find depends on what's left there.
Does a WhatsApp export include deleted messages?
No. A message deleted for everyone shows as a line saying it was deleted. A message you deleted for yourself doesn't appear at all. A file you exported before the deletion keeps the original message, because later deletions don't change it.
