WhatsApp doesn’t publish an export limit any more. You’ll still see 40,000 messages quoted online, but that number is years old. An export keeps the most recent messages, so if your chat is very long, the file can start later than the chat did. Here’s how to check, and what to try.
What WhatsApp has said
We went through old copies of WhatsApp’s help page for Android:

So nobody outside WhatsApp can give you a firm number today. People still report exports stopping at around 10,000 messages with media and 40,000 without. We haven’t found a test that settles it, and the only reliable answer is to check your own file.
How to tell if you’ve hit a limit
- Find the first message in your export. Open the file and note the date at the top.
- Find the first message on your phone. Open the chat in WhatsApp and scroll all the way up.
- Compare the two dates.
If your phone goes further back than the export, you’ve reached a limit. If the phone stops at the same date, the export is fine and the older messages aren’t on this phone. In that case, read how to get messages from an old phone.
What to try
Export without media. Without photos and videos, the file is much smaller. If the text goes further back this way, keep it as your main copy.
Then export again with media. WhatsApp’s Android page says the most recent media is added as attachments. A second export gives you those files, and you can keep the two side by side.
Pick your media on iPhone. The iPhone page offers With selected media, as well as all media or none. It helps when you only need certain files.
Try a date range on WhatsApp Web. The Web page lets you choose all messages or a custom date range, without media. You may be able to take a long chat in pieces this way. The catch is that WhatsApp says not all messages are synced to linked devices, so check the dates in each file.
Ask the other person. Their phone has its own copy of the chat, and their export may reach further back than yours.
Consider a phone backup tool. Some paid desktop programs read a full backup of your phone and pull out a whole chat. Check who makes one and how it handles your data before you trust it with your messages.
If the file is too big to send
A big ZIP may be too large for email. Save it to Files on iPhone or to a cloud drive instead. If the export freezes or fails, our page on WhatsApp export problems has the usual fixes.
What about chats that can’t be exported at all
If Export chat is missing from just one chat, the other person or a group admin may have turned on a privacy setting. WhatsApp’s Restricted chat, which is replacing Advanced Chat Privacy, blocks exports. In a one-to-one chat, either person can turn it on. If they won’t turn it off, an export isn’t possible from that chat, and screenshots may be your only option.
Working with a long chat once you have it
A very long text file is hard to read. You can open your export on Chatonfile.com and read, search and filter it for free, on your own device. You’ll see the dates it covers straight away, which is the quickest way to check for a limit.

How many messages can WhatsApp export?
WhatsApp no longer says. Its help page gave 10,000 with media and 40,000 without in 2023, then 100,000 either way in 2024, and removed the figure by April 2025. People still report exports stopping at the older numbers, so check your own file.
Why does my WhatsApp export only go back a few months?
Either the export hit a limit, or the older messages aren't on that phone. Scroll to the top of the chat in WhatsApp. If the phone goes further back than the export, it's a limit. If it stops at the same place, the older messages are on another phone or in a backup.
Can I export a WhatsApp chat by date range?
Not on a phone. WhatsApp's help page says WhatsApp Web lets you pick all messages or a custom date range, without media. Web only holds the messages synced to it, so check that the file covers what you need.
