WhatsApp’s own Message Summaries can sum up your unread messages, but only in some countries and four languages, and the summary disappears when you leave it. To summarize a whole chat, or one from years ago, you need to export it and give it to an AI tool. A text export has no audio in it, so the tool only sees the typed messages unless you give it the voice notes as well.
WhatsApp’s own summaries
Message Summaries is the right choice for catching up on a busy group today.
- What it covers. Unread messages in one-to-one and group chats. The option appears once you have enough unread messages.
- Where it works. WhatsApp says it’s only in limited countries, with English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish supported. Its help pages don’t list the countries.
- How to turn it on. Go to Settings, Chats, Private Processing. It’s off by default. Then tap the unread messages count in a chat.
- How long it lasts. The summary disappears when you scroll away or leave the chat, and only you can see it.
- Who can stop it. A group admin, or either person in a one-to-one chat, can turn on Restricted chat, which blocks it.
So it can’t help with a chat you’ve already read, a year of messages, or anything you need to keep.
Summarize a whole chat with an AI assistant
General AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini can read an exported chat.
- Export the chat without media.
- Unzip it if it’s a ZIP, and find the text file.
- Upload the file and ask for what you need.
A specific request gets a better answer than “summarize this”. For example:
List the decisions, promises, amounts and dates in this chat. For each one, say who said it and when, and quote their words.
Watch out for these:
- Voice notes are left out. The text file only has a line such as
<Media omitted>where each note was. If people talk more than they type, the AI misses much of the chat. - Long chats may be cut short. Check the summary mentions the later months as well as the first ones.
- It can get things wrong. AI tools can misread who said what or invent details, so check anything important against the messages.
- Your chat is other people’s too. Look at the tool’s data settings and find out whether it uses uploads for training.
How the options compare
| WhatsApp’s summaries | AI assistant | Chatonfile.com | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Covers | Unread messages | What the tool can read of the text file | The whole export, up to 50,000 messages |
| Voice notes | Not stated | Left out, unless you add the audio yourself | Written out first, then included, if you export with media |
| Can you keep it | No | You copy it yourself | Yes, as a PDF |
| Can you check it | Against your chat | If you ask for quotes | Each highlight gives its message number |
| Cost | Free | Free or paid plan | One payment per chat |
Get a summary with voice notes included
If your chat has voice notes, this is where we can help. Open your export on Chatonfile.com and read it free on your device. If you export with media and order a PDF, every voice note is written out, and then the summary is written from the whole chat, in the language you choose.
The summary comes with key highlights such as decisions, promises, agreements, amounts and refusals. Each one gives the number of the message it came from, and the full numbered timeline follows in the same PDF, so you can check it in seconds. We delete the chat text as soon as the PDF is made, and our security page lists who handles what.
AI can still make mistakes in a summary, so read the messages behind anything that matters. That’s especially true if you plan to rely on a promise, as our article on whether a WhatsApp message is legally binding explains.
Getting the most from a summary
- Check the dates. A summary can only cover what’s in the export. If it starts late, read about the WhatsApp export limit.
- Look at who said it. In a group, a summary can blur several people into one view.
- Treat jokes with care. AI tools can take sarcasm literally, so read the messages around anything surprising.
Common questions
Can WhatsApp summarize a chat for me?
Only your unread messages, and only in limited countries and four languages: English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish. It's off by default. It can't summarize a whole chat or messages you've already read.
How do I turn off WhatsApp message summaries?
Go to Settings, then Chats, then Private Processing, and turn it off. WhatsApp says it's off by default, so you only need to do this if you turned it on.
Can ChatGPT summarize a WhatsApp chat?
Yes. Export the chat and upload the text file. It works from the text, so voice notes are left out, and very long chats may be cut short. Check its data settings first, because the chat includes other people's private messages.
Can I summarize a WhatsApp group chat?
Yes. WhatsApp's Message Summaries cover unread messages in groups where the feature is available. For a group's whole history, export it the same way as any other chat and use an AI tool.
