WhatsApp chat statistics: how to see who texts more

WhatsApp has no chat statistics screen, but an export holds the numbers: who writes most, who starts conversations, reply times and your busiest hours.

WhatsApp doesn’t have a statistics screen for a chat. To see who sends more messages, who starts conversations and when you talk, export the chat and open it with a tool that can count. It takes a few minutes.

What the numbers can tell you

Each number answers a different question, and each can mislead you if it’s read alone.

Number What it shows Read it with care
Messages per person Who writes more often Some people send five short lines where others send one long one
Words typed Who writes more in total Words spoken in voice notes aren’t counted
Voice notes and recording time Who talks more Some notes may have no known length
Conversations started Who reaches out first We count a new conversation after at least 6 hours of quiet, so a long working day can look like a new start
Typical reply How long someone usually takes to answer Sleep and work count as waiting
Time of day When you talk Times are as the export shows them, so time zones can shift them
Day of the week Which days are busiest Holidays and shifts can skew it
Longest gap The longest silence A gap can also mean messages are missing from the export

How to see your numbers

  1. Export the chat. Include media if you want voice note counts and recording time. Our guide shows how to export a WhatsApp chat.
  2. Open it on Chatonfile.com. Drop in the file. It stays on your device and nothing is uploaded.
  3. Choose to see the chat in numbers. You’ll see who writes more, who starts, the hours and days you talk and the longest silence. It’s all free.

In a group of up to four people, the charts show each person. In a bigger group, they show the three people who write most, with everyone else together.

To see an example first, our page on WhatsApp relationship analysis shows how the numbers can look over time.

How to read them fairly

Numbers show patterns. They can’t tell you what someone feels, and most chats have ordinary explanations.

  • Look at more than one number. Someone who sends fewer messages may write longer ones or send more voice notes. Count all three before you decide who “talks more”.
  • Think about their day. A slow reply from someone working night shifts means something different from a slow reply on a Sunday afternoon.
  • Check the dates first. The numbers only cover what’s in your export. If it starts late, they may tell you only part of the story. See the WhatsApp export limit.
  • Be careful with one bad month. Illness, travel and busy periods all show up as a change, so read the messages from that time before you draw a conclusion.

What about WhatsApp Wrapped

WhatsApp Wrapped is what people call a Spotify-style yearly recap of a chat. We found no official version from WhatsApp. The ones you’ll find are made by other companies, and they work from an exported chat. Our article on WhatsApp Wrapped goes through them in more detail.

Quality varies. A German test found that some values in one of these tools appeared randomly generated. Before you use one, find out whether it reads your chat on your device or uploads it, and read its privacy policy. The same article says one of these apps charges a subscription of about 6 euros for the full analysis.

Getting it on paper

The charts are free on screen. If you order a PDF, it includes the same numbers alongside the dated timeline, every voice note written out and a summary with the key highlights and promises. To sum up the content of a chat as well as its numbers, read how to summarize a long WhatsApp chat.

Common questions

How do I see how many messages I've sent on WhatsApp?

WhatsApp doesn't show a message count for each person in a chat. Export the chat and open it in a tool that counts the messages. In a chat of up to four people, you'll see the total for each person, along with words typed and voice notes. In a bigger group, you'll see the top three and everyone else together.

Is there an official WhatsApp Wrapped?

We found no official version. WhatsApp Wrapped is a name people use for yearly recaps made by other companies' tools, which work from an exported chat. Check how accurate each one is and whether it uploads your chat.

How can I tell who texts more in a WhatsApp chat?

Look at messages per person and words typed together. One person may send many short messages while the other sends fewer long ones, so one number alone can mislead you.

Are WhatsApp chat analyzers safe?

It depends on the tool. Some read your chat on your device, and others upload it to their servers. Your chat holds other people's private messages too, so read the privacy policy and look for a clear statement about uploads.
