WhatsApp Wrapped: how to see your year in a chat

We found no official WhatsApp Wrapped. How the tools work, what they show, what to check before you upload a chat, and how to get your numbers on your device.

WhatsApp Wrapped isn’t a WhatsApp feature, as far as we can find. It’s a name for tools made by other people, which read an exported chat and show a Spotify-style recap of who said what and when. You can get one in a few minutes, and many say they work without uploading your chat. Check that before you use one.

Is there an official one

We looked on WhatsApp’s blog and in the tech press in October 2026 and found no such feature. That could change, especially around the end of the year, so look at WhatsApp’s blog if you want to be sure.

We found no statistics screen for a chat in WhatsApp either. The tools we looked at start with an export.

How the tools work

  1. Export your chat. Our guide shows how to export a chat. Choose without media, because some tools only take the text.
  2. Give the tool your file. On a good one, it’s read inside your browser.
  3. See the recap. Most show it as a series of cards you can share.

Here’s what they usually show:

What you see What it counts
Who texts more Messages per person
Top emoji and words What gets used most
Busiest hours and days When the chat is active
Who starts Who writes first after a quiet spell
Reply times How long each person takes to answer
Longest streak Days in a row with messages
Longest silence The biggest gap
Labels such as night owl Often just the share of messages sent late
Relationship scores Varies, and the method often isn’t explained

What to check before you use one

Your chat holds private things, and it holds the other person’s words as well as yours.

  • Where it reads your chat. Many tools say the file stays in your browser. Some add uploads for paid or AI features, so read what each feature does. Open-source projects such as chatwrapped and whatsapp-wrapped publish their code, so people can check what they claim. whatsapp-wrapped also suggests Google Colab, which means uploading your chat, so run it on your own computer if you want the chat to stay there.
  • A simple test. Load the tool’s page, turn off your Wi-Fi and mobile data, then give it your file. If it still works, it isn’t sending your chat anywhere at that step. Close the page before you reconnect.
  • Who runs it. Read the privacy policy and look for the name of a company or a person.
  • What it asks for. A tool only needs your exported file. If it asks for your phone number, a code or a QR scan, stop. WhatsApp says linking your account to an unofficial app or website can get it banned. Malwarebytes has described a scam that hijacks accounts through WhatsApp’s own pairing steps.
  • Whether the numbers are real. A German test found that some values in one tool appeared randomly generated.

We found no reports of scams using the WhatsApp Wrapped name. In 2023, a spokesperson for the Dutch data protection authority said it had no complaints about “wrapped” apps, and advised care with apps that collect data in general.

Before you post your cards, remember they show someone else’s habits as well as yours. Our article on sharing WhatsApp messages goes through what can go wrong.

How to read your results fairly

These numbers are fun, and they can surprise you. They’re a poor guide to how a relationship is going. We found no solid research linking message counts or reply speed in a real chat to how good a relationship is.

Here’s what the research does say:

  • Quick replies are common in close chats. A 2026 preprint from Bielefeld University looked at 3.4 million WhatsApp and Instagram messages donated by 97 people, with a median age of 24, who were asked to pick their most important chats. Around 70% of WhatsApp messages were answered within five minutes, and chat partners tended to reply at similar speeds. The authors didn’t measure how close people felt, and the paper isn’t shown as peer reviewed.
  • We misjudge our own habits. The same research group found that people’s beliefs about how fast they reply and how much they write are often wrong. This is the best reason to look at your numbers.
  • Style may matter more than quantity. In a 2018 survey of 205 young adults, those who saw their partner’s texting style as similar to their own reported being more satisfied. One of the authors said how couples texted mattered more than how often. It was self-reported, so it can’t show cause and effect.

So keep it light. Sleep, work and a long voice note all change the numbers. Our guide to reading chat statistics fairly explains what each number can and can’t tell you.

Getting just one year

A very long chat’s export may start later than the chat did. Some Wrapped tools let you pick a year. If you need a file for one period, WhatsApp’s help page says WhatsApp Web offers a custom date range, without media. Web doesn’t hold all your messages, so check the dates in the file.

See your numbers on your own device

You can open your export on Chatonfile.com and choose to see the chat in numbers. You’ll see who writes more, who starts, the hours and days you talk and the longest silence, and it’s free. The file stays on your device, and nothing is uploaded. We don’t do emoji counts, streaks or scores, and our charts cover the whole export. Our page on WhatsApp relationship analysis shows how they can look over time.

If you’d like to keep it, you can order a PDF with those numbers, your whole export in date order, a summary of the key highlights and promises and, if you export with media, the voice notes written out.

Common questions

Does WhatsApp have its own Wrapped?

We found no official one in October 2026, on WhatsApp's blog or in the tech press. The tools we looked at are made by other people and work from an exported chat.

Is WhatsApp Wrapped safe?

It depends on the tool. One that only reads your exported file doesn't touch your account, though it may upload your chat. Avoid any that asks for your phone number, a code or a QR scan, because linking an unofficial app can get your account banned.

Can a Wrapped tell me if my relationship is healthy?

We found no solid evidence that message counts or reply times show how good a relationship is. They're fun and they can prompt a conversation. Treat any relationship score as entertainment.

Can I get a Wrapped for just one year?

Some tools let you pick a year. If yours doesn't, WhatsApp's help page says WhatsApp Web can export a custom date range, though Web only holds the messages synced to it.
